Jacksonville's eTown is laying the groundwork for a 15-minute city. Have you looked around your area to see what the city planners have in store for you?
These cities could work IFF (if and only if to the non nerds) they had jobs nearby.
But it's frakking useless.
Even when I lived in big cities, I had ridiculous commutes whether by public transport or driving.
What's funny is that the USSR sort of had this. Friends of mine had grown up in families that were moved close to the factories that they worked in. When transferred, they didn't need to worry about finding an apartment or selling their homes and having to buy another.
The only problem with “getting as far away as possible” from the 15-minute cities is that the rural areas are no safer. The United Nations Agenda 2030 project will eventually remove all humans from rural areas. The following concepts apply:
You're 100% right. Until that happens, though, I at least want to enjoy a little serenity.
All we can really do is focus on what's within our control. And moving away from the seedlings of this 15-minute city seems like a good idea to me! As for what happens when they come to uproot us out of rural America? I don't know, but I'm sure I'll have some thoughts as that time approaches.
My impression is that they either work online until their usefulness wears out (euthanasia, anyone?), or are scheduled to be eliminated and replaced with deepfakes, which is already happening in remote relationships:
Great insights! I don't know if they'll eliminate people -- at least not ones who are young enough to work and breed. I keep envisioning something close to "Fifteen Million Merits" from Black Mirror (https://black-mirror.fandom.com/wiki/Fifteen_Million_Merits).
Think of how easy that would be to sell to the population. They won't have to work regular stressful jobs 9-to-5 anymore. They won't have to commute. Hell, they won't even have to interact with one another. And the days of earning a salary will be long gone. Instead, they get to sit in front of a screen, watching whatever they want, while riding a stationary bicycle. All for the greater good of powering the electric grid of their 15-minute city.

Thank you, Suzanne; this is good stuff.
Why are people forced into 15-minute "cities"?
